Indigo as a living colour system, from seed to vat to ink.
Indigo is more than a blue pigment. It’s a living process that connects plants, chemistry, textiles and traditional knowledge. Over four evenings, Roua Atelier takes you through the full journey: from growing plants and extracting pigment to building and caring for a living dye vat, creating patterns, and turning an exhausted vat into natural inks.
You won’t just learn to dye textiles blue. You’ll learn to read a vat, recognise when it’s healthy, respond when it needs attention and keep it alive over time. It’s a practical skill set and a new perspective on natural colour within a circular, regenerative textile system.
The series
1 | Understanding Indigo: From Plant to Pigment
Thursday 5 November
Indigo-producing plants, their cultivation and harvest, how pigment develops and how it’s extracted. The chemistry behind indigo, the different types of vat, and make your own vat.
2 | Living with Indigo: Dyeing and Maintaining the Vat
Thursday 12 November
How different natural fibres respond to indigo, with dyeing, layering and overdyeing. Above all: how to care for a vat, read its signs and troubleshoot, so you work with it rather than just use it.
3 | Indigo Patterns: Resist, Batik and Experimental Techniques
Thursday 19 November
Shibori, folding, binding, wax resist and batik, combined with contemporary textile design methods to create your own patterns and textures.
4 | Beyond Blue: From Exhausted Vat to Natural Ink
Thursday 26 November
Pigment recovery, ink-making recipes, applications and fixing methods. The series closes with a regenerative view on waste, material life cycles and circular colour.
