Foundations of Hand Spinning | Masterclass with Akash Kumar
Friday 27 November 2026 | 10:00-16:00
Masterclass | €120 incl. lunch
NOOF, Torenallee 22-06, Strijp-S Eindhoven
From raw fibre to your own hand-spun yarn, in one day.
This masterclass introduces you to the craft and knowledge of hand spinning. Through history, demonstration and guided experimentation, you discover how fibre, tools and twist come together to form yarn.
It connects traditional textile knowledge with the future of fashion. By reconsidering the relationship between material, time and craftsmanship, you explore how an age-old technique can inform regenerative materials, circularity and a more material-conscious design culture.
The day
10:00 The history of spinning: from takli and charkha to the treadle wheel, and Gandhi’s use of spinning as a symbol of self-reliance
10:30 Understanding fibres: wool, cotton, linen and alpaca, with hands-on carding and pre-drafting
11:15 The fundamentals: drafting, twist, and S-twist and Z-twist, on a drop spindle or petite charkha
12:30 Lunch
13:15 Tools and yarn structure, including an introduction to plying a balanced two-ply yarn
14:15 Creative spinning: design your own yarn with fibre blends, colour and texture
15:30 Finishing, labelling, skeining and a closing reflection on slow craft in contemporary fashion
You’ll leave with
Your own hand-spun yarn samples, a working knowledge of fibres and twist, and a new perspective on the value of slow craft.

About Akash Kumar
Akash Kumar is a regenerative designer, researcher and educator from Bokaro, Jharkhand, India, based in The Hague, and an ECO Fellow at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Growing up in a farming family, he developed an intimate relationship with the land and the knowledge passed on through generations of hands-on practice. His work moves between craft, ecology, material culture and pedagogy, and explores how inherited skills and land-based traditions can inform more reciprocal ways of living and making. Through material experimentation and collective workshops, he creates spaces where traditional knowledge and contemporary design meet, challenge and transform one another.
