Umkhosi Wezimbokodo is a short film by The Ninevites that honors the heritage of South African Mohair and the extraordinary women artisans who bring it to life. The film traces the journey begins on the farms where the yarn is nurtured and follows the raw material into the hands of skilled local craftswomen, culminating in the creation of a masterfully finished product. It offers an intimate look at the people and processes behind the textiles and the stories of the weavers who make the collections possible. Through intimate cinematography, the film celebrates the intersection of ethical luxury, generational craftsmanship, and the resilient spirit of South African women.
South Africa produces more than 50% of the world's mohair and the film highlights this unique, luxurious, and versatile fibre, known for its exceptional quality. Umkhosi Wezimbokodo is a collaboration with Samil Natural Fibres & Karoo Weavery.
About Nonkululeko Mlangeni
Nonkululeko Mlangeni, (aka Nkuli Mlangeni-Berg) is a South African born, Swedish-based designer and founder of The Ninevites textile design studio and collaborative platform. The Ninevites produce culture-rich, ethically crafted pieces for and with artisans and brands worldwide. Through culture-led product design, workshops, and consultancy, they create tactile, thoughtful work that carries tradition forward while empowering the next generation of makers. Nkuli holds an MA in Craft from Konstfack University of Arts, Craft, and Design in Stockholm, and a Bachelor's from The Kaospilot School of Social Entrepreneurship and Design.
