The Inner Life of Scraps
Uncovering the unique patchwork of Gebei
Learn about the hidden story behind Gebei - a traditional patchwork technique from rural China in the mid-20th century, and create your own piece imprinted with intimate memories.
In this workshop, you will hear the fascinating story of this unrecognized art form born from the scraps of life. Learn about its intricate context in female labor and overlooked creativity, and revive its forgotten beauty with your own hands.
Using fabric scraps and second-hand clothing, bonded with rice glue, you will create a piece of Gebei that tells your own story of home, care, and a sense of belonging. Once dried, your creation can be framed and displayed at home.
No prior skills required! Simply bring a photo from your family life to inspire your composition, and immerse into the patching! You are also welcome to bring your own meaningful scraps to add to the patchwork. (perhaps a piece of tablecloth, a leaf, a strand of hair, or any other fragment of memory)
